Surely you know that, too: Those periods where you have absolutely no time for anything. And these are exactly the days when people turn to you like: "But you MUST come to this concert; the band is sooo great!" That`s what happened on this Tuesday evening: Birdy, an Alternative Rock band from Finland`s Capital Helsinki I have never heard of before, invited to the newly renovated and reopened "On The Rocks", as support act of Five Minutes For Myself.
As mentioned before, I actually really had no time to go to this concert. Actually, I prefer more male vocals `cause female ones often end in high singsong. And actually, I listen to harder music but a short preview of their songs via myspace shows that Birdy are not heavy at all. Well, at least not their songs... But that voice...! That voice is just "Wow!": Strong, deep, charismatic! A fact that is already revealed while you`re sitting at the PC. Half an hour later in "On The Rocks", just when the DJ starts to play the stale Nirvana song "Smells Like Teen Spirit", Birdy enter the stage... It`s time for something new!
Surprisingly, the band around frontwoman Tintti starts their gig with a very smooth composition that is only slightly accompanied by the stringed instruments and therefore put the voice of Tintti immediately into the spotlight. And against the title of the song, this great voice is not "Easy To Forget": You are just standing there, being completely captivated... Even though the band has already started to rock with the second song "Glass Shoes"... You first might expect shallow Pop Rock that is easy to sell when you hear of a band called Birdy and see the pretty lady at the mic... But: Far from it!
Whether with the intoxicating "Seven Years" or the felicitous Grand Ole Party cover "Gypsy March": The band fascinates and rocks in equal measure. And, yes: The songs rock much more when they are played Live what should be another good reason not to miss a gig of them once you get the chance to attend one. And believe it or not: This is just the second gig of Birdy! That`s what Tintti tells us after their performance when the DJ continues with the interrupted Nirvana song. We are totally amazed! The Live debut took place at the snowboard event "Wappulounas" in Ruka near Kuusamo and it`s almost one year ago that Birdy performed in the North of Finland. Hopefully it won`t take another year till their third gig. The chances are good that we don`t have to wait that long `cause Birdy are currently in the studio to record their first EP. We are looking forward to it and we will keep an eye on them - `cause it sounds like fresh spirit!
