When St. Pauli is playing against HSV, one can hear a pin drop on the streets of Hamburg. In times like this, a band as big as Sodom is needed to fill up Markthalle. In the beginning it was worried and discussed about how many people would show up when the support act came on stage.
During the tour, local bands could apply to play as support for Die Hard and Sodom in their home towns and cities. The winner was personally chosen by Tom Angelripper (as STALKER had previously informed). The winning band from Hamburg was called Sufferage. A friend of the band had signed Sufferage up and the band members got to know of their victory by their friend, who asked them to get his name on the guest entry list after signing them up and getting them their winning ticket. Later on when the band heard that they had been personally chosen by Tom Angelripper, they were shocked and needed a beer to cool off.
But now to the actual performance: The quartet, Sufferage, gave their everything to the small, but loud audience; they played 45 minutes of Death Metal, which sounded a bit like Cannibal Corpse with Finnish influences. As previously said, the audience was anything but big and apart from the obligatory first-row-moshers, the approximately 60-head strong audience was low-key. However, towards the end of the set, the audience was more numerous as well as up-beat. Not bad!
After Sufferage, Die Hard was up. By then, the football game was over and St. Pauli came out victorious. Some depressed HSV fans wandered in, along with a numerous horde of joyous St. Pauli supporters. Even though the newly arrived spectators settled around the merchandise tables and bar, the big hall was filling up and the Thrash-Death Metallers from Sweden managed to heat up the venue. I cannot say too much about Die Hard as I heard only two songs, which sounded like mediocre rambling, which failed to leave any strong thrills and I got a chance to ask Sodom’s Bernemann about their collaboration with Roberto Blanco. Sorry Die Hard.

When Sodom came on stage, the audience added up to approximately 600 and the mood was higher than it had been for ages in the Markthalle. The trio from the Ruhr were greeted with a big hello and they immediately rocked the audience with the title track from the latest album “In War and Pieces.” By the time the band got to “Sodomy and Lust,” there was already a sizeable circle-pit, which was too wild to get any decent photos of.
During the whole concert, Bernemann wore a grin stretching from ear to ear and Tom Angelripper was giving out beer and his t-shirt between the songs; he also delivered many witty comments, like “You know that I always go for a drink after the show?”, which was followed by many joyous shouts and his next comment “…but not tonight.” The new drummer found his place really well and played with much more precision and drive than one could ever expect. Sodom lashed out with popular songs, like “Agent Orange,” “Ausgebombt” and “Nuclear Winter” during which, one fan growled “St. Pauli!” into the microphone.
The happy St. Pauli fans left the Markthalle with huge smiles as well as the consoled, yet slightly annoyed HSV fans. Hopefully Sodom will return swiftly. The only point missing to make up for a full ten came from Die Hard, which was outdone by the other performers.
