Today is Mother´s Day and here in Z7 the appropriate event takes place. After successfully completing the last few Swiss gigs in Zürich, La Grande Dame from Finland, Tarja Turunen, returns, once again, to the venerable halls of Z7. Together with her two support acts, she fully relies on girl power tonight.
Leaves Eyes
I didn´t quite understand why Leaves Eyes as the surprise act had to play first, even before the pretty unknown Kells. Even though Liv and her colleagues performed at Z7 only 8 days earlier, they gave their all again and played mostly songs from their new album Meredead like for example the earworm Velvet Heart. With those, Liv´s husband Alex can relax a little bit because he has less vocal parts with the new songs. Even without his vocal contributions, the band manages to get the crowd going and is acknowledged with frenetic applause. Despite a ligament rupture, Liv dances elf-like across the stage and appears way more satisfied and happy as with the band´s last gig. A brilliant performance that was a lot of fun to watch.
Kells
My first thought when I saw Virg, singer of Kells, was, “Did someone mix up the Z7 with the location of the Eurovision Song Contest?” In a satin dress, that couldn´t be any shorter, and with a huge flower on her hip, this lady entered the stage. Alright then, let´s hope at least the vocals are convincing, then everything else can be simply overlooked. Well, big disappointment here, too. On top of it, she jumps over the stage like a sparrow on dope and doesn´t really seem to care that everyone can see her cream-coloured knickers. And because of all the jumping around, her vocals get even worse. The sound isn´t too bad but sometimes less is definitely more and in this case, one should focus way more on singing and think about how to move in a dress like this with a tiny bit more class.
Tarja
After a longer break, finally Tarja is here to perform. In the pretty packed Z7, the temperature must be something like 100°C – it feels like the biggest sauna in the world. Who would´ve thought that Switzerland could beat Finland in that category? After a long intro, the first notes of Afternoon of Death sound and Tarja, Mike, Max and co enter the stage. In a long, black coat, Tarja whirls over the stage with a beaming smile on her face. Throughout her two-hour show, she stresses several times how happy she is to be back at Z7 and that all her friends and family know how much she loves it here.
Tarja performs mostly songs from her latest output What Lies Beneath and thus, almost every new song is played tonight. But she didn´t forget about some old favourites like I Walk Alone and Die Alive from her debut Winterstorm, either. Additionally, Tarja plays three quieter songs, here she accompanies herself on keyboard. However, with those songs, she´s pretty much at the back of the stage and so not everyone can see her.
And what would be a Tarja show without some Nightwish classics, with Stargazers, though, she didn´t make the best selection. Nevertheless, the crowd is happy and goes especially wild with this song, which proves once again that it doesn´t matter, who plays the songs but it DOES matter a lot, who sings the songs. One has to also state that even an ´old-hand´ like Tarja can still learn something new because during the last years, her stage shows has become better and better. She has an unbelievable presence and charisma on stage. Once again an awesome show from Tarja Turunen.
