“The Beauty And The Beat” should have been a one-time thing only. But the response was so positive, or was it the money that the unique project was taken on a world tour and recorded for a DVD. Tarja Turunen (former Nightwish) and Mike Terrana (former Axel Rudi Pell, Rage and a lot of others) know each other for a long time and at some point decided they want to unite their talents in Symphonic Rock. For live shows, the two planned to deliver a mixture of old and new stuff, of classic music and Rock tracks. Hence, their setlist contains Tarja´s own songs and tracks from Led Zeppelin and Queen but also pieces composed by Puccini, Bach and Mozart. For those who love classic music, this DVD should be a great thing. But for everyone else, it is quite a torture to listen through all of those classic tracks until the Rock songs finally begin. Also “the beat” gets almost completely lost within the orchestral sounds. And when you can eventually hear it, it´s too dominant and totally destroys the moment. On a more positive note, Tarja´s performance is great. The same is true for the orchestra. It goes without saying that Tarja is, of course, “the beauty” on this live recording but where is “the beat”? Especially the beginning of the record is quite bleak, so it is hard to keep on listening. More beat and less beauty would have been really nice here. Unfortunately, the many well-done cover songs cannot raise the value of this live DVD either.
