Although the band is already around since 1998, I havenīt heard much of them so far. With “II”, the Danish Power Metal band released its third album in March. They already had the honor to share stages with bands like Circle II Circle or Jorn and also played a few festivals. Their earlier released records were showered with rave reviews. Unfortunately, the press release made a horrible mistake: Gustav Blide is praised as the lead singer on the entire album but itīs actually Erik “EZ” Blomkvist, who did all the vocals. What Gustav does now in the band or if he even is in the band still, I couldnīt find out. But one thing is for sure, Erik certainly has an unusual voice for this kind of music: quite deep and rough, really not at all Power Metal-like. But itīs exactly this that gives the whole thing certain uniqueness. On the negative side, it does not always fit and I somehow have the impression that itīs not really healthy to sing like that. But at least you canīt say that Seven Thorns are a copy of another band. Music-wise, Power Metal fans get their familiar guitar solos, keyboard passages and fast drums, which always sound the same, though. The vocals really save the band from sounding just like any other Power Metal band. The songs are ok but somehow that certain something is missing to make it sound more harmonious. There is still a lot of room for improvement; I would keep the singer and make him train his voice to be able to reach also the heights. Sometimes just that fits to the sound.
