About two years ago, Anette, like her predecessor Tarja, had to leave Nightwish and found a new home with the label Ear Music. People, who know me, know that I am absolutely no fan of Anette´s Nightwish performances. In my opinion, the bombastic music of Nightwish just didn´t suit her vocal style. Still, I was very curious about her solo record. And one thing I can say straight away, the Swede fully won me over. Finally, music and vocals fit together. The people, who wrote the songs, did a really great job: tailor-made compositions that fit her voice 100%. Of course, it is not a Rock album, that´s for sure, but there are some elements that could pass for it. Is it comparable to Nightwish? No! It is better, better for her. Everything fits together 100%, which hasn´t´ been the case before. With this record, she regained some respect and convinced me that she is a good singer after all… at least on record. If it works out live, we will surely find out soon. The mainly soft songs on “Shine” are a perfect fit for her and even though she touches some heavy topics with the lyrics, a light feeling remains. Pop-Rock with a melancholic touch, nice arrangements and a very gentle and fragile sounding Anette make this album an absolute listening pleasure. Even if many Nightwish fans won´t like it, I can say, for the first time, that I support her and that I think that nothing better could have happened to her, than leaving Nighwish behind and make this kind of music. The album sounds as if Anette finally arrived where she always wanted to go, as if she is satisfied and happy about the music she is doing. And her live performances will surely benefit from it.
