Emo bands often walk on a very thin line between nauseating over-romanticization and reflective observation of life. Back One Out from Italy fall with their already in 2006 recorded debut album “Helpless” rather into the first category and adhere strictly to the tried and tested formula: harmonious dual singing, stereotypical romantic-melancholic boy-girl-suicide lyrics, unostentatious instrumentation and catchy choruses. It comes as no surprise to learn that the album was mastered by Alan Douches who has also worked with Fall Out Boy and exactly that´s how it sounds – Fall Out Boy by numbers. What did Back One Out bring to the mix? Niente! The only ray of hope is the song “Monsters” that tries at least to some extent to swap the sticky sugar coating for something a little more solid. To say it with the words of Simon Cowell on American Idol: I was bored to tears. And I don´t mean to be rude…
