Yes, it still exists: good old, traditional heavy metal. Powerwolf, from the stables of Metal Blade. With their debut album "Return In Bloodred", rumanian singer Attila Dorn and his heavy posse prove that there's still "old school"! Their first album contains nine dark, mid-tempo songs. Even though their name hints at classical power metal, the manage to give their album a very own sound. The mostly dark voice of singer Attila Dorns is very characteristic and with his classical opera training received at the music academy of Bucharest, he manages to use his voice for metal purposes like a regular Tarja T. Many of the tracks have a certain gothic sound to them, like the catchy "Demons and Diamonds". Other tracks are a bit doom-like, which gives the album a dark, melancholy sound. And when you hear the chimes and the howling of wolves, it becomes clear. "Son Of The Morning Star" is further proof that this music tends towards the black side, even though songs like "Black Mass Hysteria" come across as classic heavy metal. If you used to like Mercyful Fate or Omen, you will enjoy this, and possibly even fans of Saviour Machine will feel eerily good about this album. The band will probably be proved right with their song "We Came To Take Your Souls". And "Mr. Sinister" definitely gave us the creeps!
