When words like „astral projection“, „ether“ and the “Khlysty” sect are mentioned to describe the topic of an album then only our four favourite cavemen of Mastodon can come to mind. With “Crack the Skye” fantasto-drummer Brann Dailor and his men have released their fifth album and there are only two words to describe this work – spaced out and insane. Compared to previous albums they boldly go even further into infinite, psychedelic vastness and you have to wonder which or how many illegal substance were involved in the creation of this record. But there are also some personal stories which are worked up on the album, for example Brent Hinds´ hospitalisation and after-effects after the MTV Video Music award incident and also Brann Dailor´s loss of his sister Skye, see album title, who took her life as a teenager. Musically, the band doesn´t cheap out on anything and so there are besides hypnotizing guitars, crazy drums and almost sing-along-friendly vocals one or the other banjo, keyboard or gong. “Crack the Skye” is therefore an album which only reveals itself completely when you know a little bit more about the story behind. On that note, have fun on your own astral projection courtesy of Mastodon!
