Are you fed up by all the same stuff that´s being released? If so, you should maybe lend Bad Luck Rides On Wheels your eyes and ears. This is the perfect records for fans of damn heavy stuff, that´s hard to consume and that is slowly but continuously shoveling it´s way into your ears and brain. Mell Dettmer, who has already produced extraordinary acts like Sunn O))), Boris and Kinski, has done a fabulous job here as well. With that being said, fans might already roughly know what to expect!

This debut is entitled with “1st Album” - really simple title for an album that´s everything but simple. It´ll take a lot of effort to get into it, but when you´re up to putting some effort into listening , this album will open up a world of interesting music to you. BLROW mix elements of Death and Black Metal, Sludge, Doom and Drone and chop it off with a bit of Hardrock. Yes, this records is a listening-challenge, this mixture of genres might seem a bit wild, but once you got used to it, you won´t be able to escape this gloomy, brute roller. It takes a lot of time to get into it and the band also takes lots of time to present their material: There are only 2 songs, out of 8, that stay beyond the 8-minute-mark, the last one named “Garden Of Bones” even reaches 17 minutes!

One thing is for sure, you won´t put this record back in your cd shelf that soon, simply because you won´t get tired of it. Even when you listen carefully, you´ll always find some new stuff, since the songs are everything but catchy, well, apart from some passages and even those aren´t catchy in the normal sense of the word. They aren´t trying to reinvent the wheel, but this isn´t necessary, when you´re creating such an atmosphere like they´re doing, it´s convincing enough! The songs are accompanied by an almost hysteric, at times pretty high vocal style, that might be rather disturbing or unsettling in a way. The whole CD sounds rather raw and this is no mistake, even though it might seem like this from time to time – during those 76 grueling minutes, leading the listener through various sounds, nothing was left to chance!

Since such bands always have a hard time being recognized and hardly get noticed outside a circle of fans, they put lots of effort into designing the music and CD – apart from being limited to 500 records, you´ll also find a DVD. Same goes for the LP, that is also limited and delivered with a DVD. Those, who are into the aforementioned kind of music and bands, should definitely give BLROW a try and of course those, who are open to new stuff. One thing is for sure, BLROW managed to produce an impressive debut, or should I rather say gesamtkunstwerk? Well, my advice: Listen to the CD, watch the DVD and the songs will slowly take possession of you!
