Before we start having a look at the records itself, let me introduce you to the band with a few sentences. Oblomov, founded in 2000 is a Czech band from a small city called Slaný. The name is derrived from a novel of Russian writer Goncarov. After a demo back in 2001 and an EP called "Wishing The Renaissance" in 2002, they released their debut album "Mighty Cosmic Dances" in 2005. Which is now followed by "Communitas".
In 2007 they started working on the actual, second album "Communitas" ( Deconstructing The Order). The composing of 14 songs took almost one year and contains one main theme, described by Oblomov as: "man on the edge of society, carnivals, shrovetides and the rites of passage - the phase liminality". They label their music as experimental and judging from what you can hear during the first few songs, this fits quite well, since they don´t hesitate to mix various styles/genres to a new mixture. If you don´t want to be categorized as "BM band" or something like this, just make sure you mix various styles as well as Oblomov do, then it´s surely quite impossible to label you. The main genres mixed are Black and Death Metal, but inbetween you´ll surely trip over some rather bizarre parts, like spoken elements or almost weird melodies, as well as some Metal-untypical instruments like moutharph, didgeridoo, saxophone and various kinds of flutes or organs like at the beginning of "Wings Of The Silver Drake". Apart from the organ you´ll also hear some parts with Saxophone, and almost folklike sounding parts. All in all a good mixture, not only of styles and instruments, but also the songs themselves, that vary in atmosphere, tempo and turn "Communitas" in a CD, that might take some while to get into, but are surely something else for a change. What seems to be one weird mix of instruments and styles, due to songs that differ quite a lot, at the beginning, turns into some complete package of music after a while. They also managed to win some guest musicians like Björnar E. Nilsen from Vulture Industries or Lord Morbivod from Trollech. Oblomov is probably the perfect band for those listeners, who are tired of the mainstream bands and are looking for some (yet) unknown bands off the beaten tracks. Or, like Victor Turner, American anthropologist, who has been quoted in the promosheet has said: "Structure needs antistructure".
