EXTRABREIT & Philharmonisches Orchester Hagen - this might be called a real balancing act. Really "extrabreit" - even if originally this was meant in a different way. After three decades one of the moving bands of the Neue Deutsche Welle still belongs to the active acts - concertante, philharmonic! Ripened? FSK 0 (German voluntary self-regulation) is printed on the cover, what means, this package is ready for even the toothless among us to watch it. Well, it´s not gong about a CD only which contains all the evergreens of the beginning of the 80th like "Polizisten" or "Hurra, hurra, die Schule brennt", no, additionally everything is packed on a DVD. An "extrabreit" packet.

The visual and acoustical aspects look and sound great. The band shares the stage together with the orchestra, left/right, which starts first with a perky overture and introducing with the sound of Richard Strauss´"Also sprach Zarathustra" the band itself. The first song they play is their old hit "Polizisten" in a very quiet interpretation together with the orchestra. The orchestra deforms the old and snotty punk into a defused and moderate shape. A kind of reminiscence to the old times, how formerly it has been. Nostalgia instead of brisance. But is there anything else to expect? The courteously sitting audience obviously doesn't think about pogo or headbanging; rather some may have had thought, what kind of clothes could be convenient: better tie and suit or blue jeans? Both appeared.

From "Andreas Baaders Sonnenbrille" to Chatschaturjans "Säbeltanz", heavy metal of the 40th. In the middle of the concert suddenly a break. Weird; a rock concert with a break in between - let's have a glass of Champaign, let's nibble some sweets and talk about the hairstyle. Perhaps a "philharmonic decision". After this the masters of strings and horns go on with the "Walkürenritt" of Richard Wagner. This leads to an Extrabreit-allegro, called "Allegro für Annemarie", a capella with the orchestra, short time before the orchestra solo plays a chapter of the Peer Gynt suite.

After this the evening becomes more rocky. Some rock songs one after the other pull a lot more guests of the audience in front of the stage. However, what kind of intention to play classic music together with NDW stands behind the show - the fresh, driving, sometimes raw rock does certainly better catch the people. Since the orchestra stays more in the background and gives space for the band itself, more people have fun and overcome the distance. At least the question appears: was it really necessary to connect the punk, defiant attitude of the early 80th with orchestral works of the Romantic? It looks more acrid than snappy, more intellectual than intuitive. To connect the rebelliousness of Extrabreit with classical music might look experimentally fancy, but creates an ambivalent changeling.
