Deadly events cast their shadows before – New World Shadows to be exact. And conveniently, this is also the title of the already fifth album by Finnish death metallers Omnium Gatherum. In Finland, death metal bands are a dime a dozen but Omnium Gatherum have made a name for themselves for many years.
Melodic, partly even dreamy sounding guitars are intertwined with the brutal rest – that´s OG´s recipe. However, on their predecessor, The Redshift, this mix wasn´t so well executed, in my humble opinion. Especially fronter Jukka Pelkonen´s voice simply didn´t fit to the rest of the ensemble. Now, there seems to have been a change of mind – everything sounds way more sophisticated and well, it just fits a lot better. Jukka´s growls appear way more gruesome (this time he solely focused on them, handing clean vocal duty, for two songs, over to Mr Dan Swanö, who took pretty good care of them) and also the overall atmosphere of the album is more gloomy than last time. There are also two songs (the first Everfields and the last one Deep Cold) that have almost epic proportions with more than 9 minutes of play time – if that´s not part of a “concept” than I dunno. The only constant are the beautiful guitar passages from Markus Vanhala, which you could already admire on the predecessor (and probably also on the three albums before).
All in all, there are maybe a bit less catchy tunes on New Worlds Shadows but instead of them, you get some material that can easily spread a certain atmosphere homogenously throughout your room.
