The new year has just started and we already got the first bombastic CD!
Legion of the Damned have unleashed their latest record „Descent into Chaos“. Introducing this band should be futile – if you haven´t heard of them during the past few years, you should really wonder where the hell you´ve been all the time. It was almost impossible to not catch them live somewhere – thanks to their omnimpresence with live gigs and (at least) one release per year.
While some probably say, that their sound doesn´t change much, you have to agree on the one hand, but at the same time you also have to admit, that they had managed to keep the same high quality of grooving Thrash madness over the years.
„Descent into Chaos“ is absolutely no exception. After a menacing, gloomy, apocalyptic intro with a dark voice announcing „this is the age of chaos, this is the age of fear“ hell is unleashed right away with „Night of the Sabbath“. From the first second onwards, it should be clear which CD just found the way into your hifi.
„War is in my Blood“ adds a bit more brutality and almost has a Behemoth like touch at the beginning, before it falls back into the thrashy groove. While you thought that it´s really exactly the same, you soon realize all the small details in the sound, that make it sound somewhat different – it turns out, that it was one of the best ideas they had, to change the producer. That does not mean, that their former producer (Andy Classen) was doing a bad job, absolutely not, but Mr Tägtgren managed to add a fresh touch to their regular sound. If there was a price for straight-forwardness in sound, the Dutch would´ve won it. Songs like „Holy Blood, Holy War“ or „Killzone“ corroborate the stronger focus on Thrash, compared to former albums. The only song, that gives you a few seconds to breath is the beginning of „Lord of the Flies“ - however, this peace won´t last for long. While some songs got a stronger Thrash touch, that was accompanied by a reduction of the Death Metal elements, the following „Desolation Empire“ makes up for that with a bigger Death touch. The normal version of the CD ends with the evil „Repossessed“, while the limited version comes along with „Legion of the Damned“ as bonustrack, that features Peter Tägtgren on the vocals.
So „Descent into Chaos“ will once again divide people into two groups: Those who love it and those, who complain that´s it´s the same procedure as every time. Let´s be honest, this is the material, that we want to hear from LotD and it´s pretty sure, that people would also yell and complain, if they changed their style dramatically. My conclusion is thus: Once again a strong album! If you didn´t like the other albums, you´ll most likely complain again, don´t buy it, if you however liked the previous albums, just get it!
