If "Split Your Lip", the meanwhile eighth studio album of Hardcore Superstar, wouldn`t haven been released already in the end of November 2010, it very likely would have become THE album of the year 2011! But anno 2010, I didn`t really pay much attention to the subject "Hardcore Superstar" and thus considered the enthusiasm involving the gentlemen Berg (Vocals), Zino (Guitar), Sandvick (Bass) and Andreasson (Drums) just as one of many hypes. This, however, quickly changed, when I got the opportunity to attend one of their live shows and already with their grandiose show opener "Sadistic Girls", they captured my heart by storm! And exactly the same song is the opener of "Split Your Lip". After some initial drumming, the guys kick off sleaze metal proceedings right away: There couldn`t be a more perfect opening!
As with their live-shows, the album continues with "Guestlist”. With "Last Call For Alcohol" and the title track "Split Your Lip", the next party anthems are following before you arrive at one of the most popular songs of the Scandinavians: "Moonshine". Hardly any other song is so deafeningly requested at Hardcore Superstar concerts like this one but even though in the beginning it sounds like it, “It is not a ballad!", as Jocke Berg reassured at the Hamburg concert of the "Dark Decadence" tour. Indeed, it isn`t, instead it´s a rock smasher like all the previous tracks.
The first real ballad follows after "Moonshine", with "Here Comes That Sick Bitch". After all these "Raise your fist, bang your head and party the hell out!" titles, a breather was needed - but in this case, it`s a well-done one. You can take it literally and take a breath, snog or - if you really can`t resist - wave the lighter, but that doesn`t mean that "Here Comes That Sick Bitch" is one of those kitschy wave-the-lighters songs. After 3 minutes and 21 seconds, the listener`s ability to party is required again with "What Did I Do", the outstanding "Bully" and "Won`t Go To Heaven" before the party`s drawing to an end with "Honeymoon". And then, the final ballad "Run To Your Mama"... Well, it`s nothing more than a song the DJ would play at the end of the night to get the people out of the club - and he would succeed in it. But after the explosion of hits before, we are able to forgive the self-proclaimed Street Metallers for this one little lapse...
If you haven`t experienced a live-show of Hardcore Superstar yet, you should definitely catch up on it as fast as possible. The same applies to this record: If you want to experience the feeling of their live-shows also at home, the purchase of "Split Your Lip" is absolutely indispensable `cause it`s not only the songs that will remind you of past gigs. As drummer Adde explained in an interview, the whole album has been recorded live to capture the atmosphere of a real show. The guys, who are in the business for already one and a half decades and therefore definitely aren´t "one of many hypes", have done an awesome job! So don`t run to your mama - Run to your record dealer!
