Ladies (and Gentlemen), we all know that unfortunately all fun things in life are either illegal, unhealthy, make fat - or are way too expensive. Now finally here is one thing that is just fun - without all those mentioned side-effects! He had not released a solo album in 10 years, but now with the brand new "If Life was Easy" CD, Roger Glover presents himself once again as a gifted musician/multi-instrumentalist/singer. He´s the man behind a lot of hits of his main band Deep Purple and wrote legendary ear candy like the Butterfly Ball Song (Vocals: Ronnie James Dio). And because Roger seems to shy away from the limelight a bit too much, it is up to me to recommend this album.
Although the musical focus is Blues-Rock, the songs do not resemble any Purple stuff at all. Glover uses Folk, Jazz, Soul and Reggae elements and performs the vocals on most of them - his versatile voice occasionally reminds of Nick Cave or Tom Waits ("Box of Tricks"), yet less depressing as those artists mentioned. Otherwise a lot of guest vocalists are featured, e.g. Nazareth´s Dan McCafferty and Roger´s daughter Gillian - she sounds a bit like Amy Winehouse on "Get Away". The album offers musical and emotional diversity, just makes you feel good and groove along - yet isn´t shallow or trivial at all. Just pay attention to those lyrics - they make you smile, or reflect on the ways of the world, or both. Definitely recommended!
