Acherontas have always been mentioned as the most promising band of the New Wave of Greek Black/Occult Metal, were re-invented during 2007 (with members of Acrimonious) and release now their 15-year anniversary album "Vamachara". According to their band info they unite 70’s rock and ritual/psychodelic influences, and it starts pretty promising with a horror/history movie atmosphere (keyboards, whispering). Who is expecting Black Metal in the Norwegian style is totally wrong, though. No atmospheric orchestras, the focus is oldschool, straight forward, creating an evil atmosphere by fine detailed guitar work - which sometimes reminds you of Iron Maiden - and wicked vocals. Those scream/growls/talks have much more of Venom-Cronos than Cradle of Filth-Dani, and there are pretty scary clean vocals, too. The keyboard stays in the background, the mixture features Doom-Groove and blast beat attacks, Melodic Death Metal and a touch Greek Folk - yet rather in "Sirtaki from Hell" style. If those nasty guitars were not a bit too much for me at times, I could enjoy this album even more. I guess it is a must for genre aficionados.

Line-up:
V.P. ACHERONTASS: 6 Strings of infernal devastation, howls & poetry of Drakkonian sorcery
AKHKHAR: 4 strings axe of shadowland
ENKWLD: 6 strings of imperial disharmony
KWAZAR: Warhammers
V.ADEPT KADMOS: Spells & hermetic philosophy

Klaudia Weber
