Beyond the Bridge truly have a long way behind them. Actually, the band is made up of members of another band called Fallout that formed in 1999. For years, they were on hiatus until, in 2005, guitarist Peter Degenfeld-Schonburg started a new project under the name of „The Old Man and The Spirit“. Since then he worked on the completion of the story behind the record and the musical background to the lyrics. Meanwhile, the band changed its name to Beyond the Bridge and christened their debut album “The Old Man and the Spirit”.

According to the band, “´The Old Man and the Spirit´ deals with the polarity of human sensousness and superhuman awareness. The latter is embodied by the character of the Spirit (played by classical jazz singer Dilenya Mar). She is the personification of all wisdom and awareness that is unachievable to mankind, however, lacks of the ability to feel. Her opponent, the character of the Old Man (played by Herbie Langhans), is presented as a bon vivant who has lived through all highs and lows of human sensation. Steadied by his old age, he searches for a sense, for a coherence, for the meaning of his life in the maelstrom of transciency.”

The record as such is not bad but I do prefer that kind of concept records like Avantasia does them. Avantasias compositions are just way more catchy and variable, maybe also more commercial. That´s why they probably go straight to your head and get stuck in your mind and this is definitely not happening here.
