The album title and the intro with its monk choir gives the impression that the main theme here is the inquisition/witch hunt... "Strix Maledictae In Aeternum", the new album from the Italian band OPERA IX, was mastered at the Necromorbus Studio in Alvik, Sweden - where symphonic black metal meets Doom and Pagan, which is a good thing because I find a blast beat&growls overdose pretty boring. Thus itīs only Dead Tree Ballad when it gets interesting for me, when powerful riffs and a haunting keyboard theme are merged together in a cool groove. It continues in a rather sinister Doom/Pagan mood much more towards Epic Metal, even with an almost cheerful interlude, until a "ceremony, not a song" breaks the mood with a "radio-play" situation (Ecate - The Ritual). The following tracks would also rather fit the Epic Metal than the Black Metal genre, in my opinion. Overall impression - quite good, give it a try; yet I doubt that Opera IX provide enough original ideas (e.g. the witch hunt theme had been done many times before) to stick out of the masses...
