The debut from Godcomplex, Ashen Empire is good, but nothing special. Their melodic black/thrash/death metal leaves a strong feeling that one has heard this already before. The Germans master their instruments and the singer, Micha is convincing. However, as song after song blast through the speakers, the lack of originality is still there. The only real originality lies in the piano-bit in the title track, “Ashen Empire” –ironically it just doesn´t quite fit into the rest of the song. Other than that, Godcomplex sounds quite Scandinavian, as they are all but tight fisted when it comes to their keyboards.

As it is self-produced, no one can expect a completely rounded creation. Too tinny, a bit sloppy, but still listenable. If Godcomplex would come up with more original ideas and a well-produced album, one should risk a go as this debut fits well in ones collection of keyboard-heavy black-/death-/trash-metal. If one would pick it out of the collection some day later for another go, it´s quite another thing. As previously stated, it´s not bad, but nothing special –upper middle class, so to say.
