The Norwegian band Oslo Ess, with singer Asmund Lande, is not yet that popular outside of their home country. After the band first met in 2007, it took until 2010 till the band became a proper and actively running project. And now they publish their already second album „Verden På Nakken, Venner I Ryggen“ and, it´s easy to hear, they have remained true to their native language, when it comes to singing.

Rocking sounds that right away grab your attention, this is what one is presented with nearly all the time on this album – and the whole is accompanied by a nice portion of catchy melodies. A few song stand out, though, with a more funky sound or with a more melodic and quiet atmosphere („Ut av det blå“).

The song “Caroline”, which is played a lot by Norwegian radio stations lately, might be one of the best songs of the album thanks to very strong vocal work. Unfortunately, the instruments´ volume often drowns out the vocals; hence, they are pushed out of the main focus, which makes it harder to really come to grips with the songs. Singing along is generally not really possible anyways, but this shouldn´t matter at least during live performances, since the music offers a high level of energy to get things moving.

The album or the Norwegians can convince thanks to a high diversity of musical influences, nevertheless one or the other listener might wonder if it is not a bit too much of diversity that is offered here. But when it comes to the vocals and the core music, „Verden På Nakken, Venner I Ryggen“ is an album that rocks and clearly shows the band´s potential.
