From the Cologne label RookieRecords I got the new release of the band Black Sheriff. The new output is called Night Terrors, it is their third and, according to the label, it is also their masterpiece. Country´n Western you´d be looking for in vain of course, instead, it´s twelve times a bull´s eye. Punkrock´n roll abound with heavy metal references.

The album starts with Turn Me On and continues with the title track, Night Terrors, two straight forward rock anthem with very cool solos. Crucify begins with a ... let´s say Accept memorial riff, in the middle part is a sing-along chorus and a solo, which – just like the first two tracks – I find very reminiscent of Motörhead. Be Your Man is next with unique AC/DC impressions, followed by Last Night. Starmageddon comes with a Backyard Babies slant and the following Flyin´ High starts with an unmistakable La Grange riff. Very cool! I still have to mention Need A Drink - a very fast punk rock song - and the much slower Drink And Get High.

As mentioned in the press release, this band is probably not receiving any innovation award, as simply everything has been there already. But hearing the built-in cross-references is quite fun: an Iron Maiden harmony here or a Deep Purple riff there etc. But nothing is simply copied (except this mentioned Deep Purple riff, of course). It´s definitely a lot of fun to listen to.
