It`s hard to believe what changes Suffocation have gone through since their last two studio albums. The five New York guys have transformed themselves from a high-speed brute-force squad to a brute-force band with technical aspirations. Here and there, they even slow down for a moment to fill the newly won space with melodic passages. And they do this well.
Productionwise, Suffocation have long said good-bye to the rumbling sound mud of the mid-nineties; on their new record I can´t find anything to nag. With “Pinnacle of Bedlam”, the band reduces the tempo various times and thus proves that they know their game also in the midtempo area. And it´s exactly this skill that makes this new album way more memorable than its already good predecessor “Blood Oath”. You can also clearly hear the New York Death Metal trademarks everywhere and the closeness to New York Hardcore.
This is a very good album! I didn`t really expect this! Recommended tracks: Purgatorial punishment, Sullen Days, Pinnacle of Bedlam.
