Releasing live documents has become inflationary these days. Although you cannot really say that about Axel Rudi Pell, his last live release Live Over Europe is only 5 years old. Now there is a follow up called Live On Fire, which is released as a DVD/CD pack. Unfortunately, many songs are on both releases, calling into question the purpose of this latest release.
Live On Fire sounds really authentic, this comprises the good and the bad. On the one hand, the sound is rough, giving the rhythm instruments a lot more power than they normally have on Axel`s more polished studio albums. On the other hand, because of this rough sound, the songs lose a lot of their mystic and bombastic atmosphere. Obviously, nothing was reworked or re-recorded. The best proof is vocalist Johnny Gioeli. At the beginning of the concert, he sounds really out of breath, delivering no good job at all. Later on, it becomes slightly better but it´s definitely not one of his best vocals works.
All of this makes Live On Fire a more or less expendable release. It´s actually only a product for die-hard fans of the band.
Note: I had only the audio tracks for reviewing, so I cannot judge the DVD material.
