The American band Saints of Ruin plays together since 2007 and with „Elevatis Velum“, the guys and girls from San Francisco released their fourth album. Nowadays, I am not really into this Gothic thing anymore, so maybe that´s why I haven´t heard from the band so far. On their new record they present ten very multi-faceted songs. No song sounds like another, so basically there should be something here for everyone´s taste. I really like the beginning of the album a lot; the songs are in perfect harmony with singer Ruby Ruin´s cool voice. But song number four, “Stare Solus”, is a song they should have left out completely. Even thought, the string orchestra suits the music well, the same can´t be said about the vocals, they are simply horrible. They do not fit at all. The way Ruby sings and also the vocal melodies, they just don´t go very well with the other elements of the song. Ruby is not a bad singer but she has a very special voice color, which doesn´t fit to every song. The band has to be very careful when writing the songs. With a few songs (“Stare Solus” & “Immnesa”), I couldn´t detect any emotions whatsoever in Ruby´s vocals. I think, slower songs are not really her kind of thing but faster or heavier ones she does really well. Surely, one or the other Gothic fan will like Saints of Ruin.
