Norwegian dark metal pioneers Aeternus have always rather turned to dark metal than black metal, and maybe that´s the reason I have always liked them. After a period of silence, the band is back with a new album and a new line-up, featuring besides mastermind, basser and singer Ares drummer Phobos (Malsain, Gravdal) and guitarist Specter (Gravdal, Tortorum). “…And The Seventh His Soul Detesteth” was recorded and mixed by Bjørnar E. Nilsen (Vulture Industries, Black Hole Generator) at Conclave & Earshot Studios in Bergen.

"There Will Be None" is quite a brutal opening, a track that could even fit to Slayer - Death Metal mixed with sick Thrash guitar soli, whereas the melodies rather go Black Metal. A lot of variety, and this could also be an overall definition of the whole album. Groove and Doom elements have always been the band´s signiture, and I notice a bit more Thrash influences on this album – which also features some bizarre melodic ideas, Prog sounds or even throat singing. Some songs seem to be thematically connected (Spurcitias, Ruin And Resurrect, The Confusion Of Tounges), at least it´s difficult to distinguish when one song ends and the next one begins, because of the many different parts and breaks. When this "one long song" goes into a real brutal blast beat finale, the following acoustic guitar Folk tune might come as surprise. Using all kinds of extreme music styles, the album reaches my personal highlight "Reap What You Saw", an epic track with cool groove and a hypnotic riff, which is continued in a way in the following track with acoustic parts and an emotional melody.

Summing up, an interesting album that does not offer instant ear candy like e.g. the legendary Shadows Of Old Album, but still something to recommend.
PS: A limited edition version of the album is released with the classic “Dark Sorcery” EP from 1995 as a bonus disc.
