What happens when an icon of black metal drags recording equipment to a hut in the middle of nowhere and records solely with analogue equipment for half a year? The result is one of the most atmospheric albums of the last years; Satyricon´s self-entitled album is one of the few positive surprises this year as far as music goes and an absolute must for the fans
The songs range from heavy to gloomy and all in all very atmospheric. This is something that Satyricon seems to do best; they create a special mood to which the listener is drawn into, especially when listening with headphones.
The album follows the same general lines as the last three albums, apart from the track track “Phoenix”, where Sivert Høyem (ex. Madrugada) sings with a clear voice. The guest vocalist fits perfectly into the tone with his Jim Morrison/Nick Cave -type singing.
As a whole, the album is pretty damn good. It floats from one genre to the next and provides something for everybody as well as something unexpected. The only thing that really bothered me was the general sound of the guitars in “Nekrohaven” and other songs, but that´s just me.
