After making music with his band, Thomas Gartler aka Rockefeller Junior delivered his solo album, “Celebrate Urban Alienation”, which unfortunately does not work for me at all. While the lyrics are really good, I don´t like the singing at all. Similar to Bob Dylan, Rockefeller Junior whines his way through the ten tracks on the album and with all due respect for his songwriting abilities even repeated listening does not make me warm up to this (with Dylan it´s the same for me).
The music, mainly guitar, is OK, fits well with each song and sometimes reminds me a little of New Model Army (“Leave this town behind”) or Tiamat (“Someone else”). All in all, there´s a lot of variety, but I have the feeling Rockefeller Junior is driving with the breaks on and some songs could be helped if they had just a bit more power. However, anyone who likes challenging and interesting lyrics should give this album a try because there are many such lyrics on here.
