No doubt, the idea behind Driving Mrs. Satan sounds very interesting: the band performs well-known Metal songs from bands like Metallica, ACDC, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest in their own special way. Take an acoustic guitar, add some bass, a few soft beats and the clear, soft voice of Claudia, et voila: you have the perfect band to play Metal songs as an acoustic trio. The band´s latest product called Popscotch features eleven songs and all of them are really beautiful. It´s weird to hear the songs played like this and occasionally one almost doesn´t recognize them but the band managed to create something truly unique and they did it in a great way. Maybe die-hard fans of Metallica and co. won´t be as excited as I am but everyone who likes to listen to quieter stuff every now and then should check this record out. Popscotch is a well done record; I wouldn´t have thought that I´d like it but all I can say is: thumbs up! Relaxed, easy-going, everything fits together perfectly. I´m already curious to know what songs they will pick for their next album. (SM, 9/10)

Four ears, one opinion:

“Heavy Metal made easier” is the tagline on Driving Mrs Satan´s website and that´s exactly what they are doing. This London/Naples-based trio turns Heavy Metal classics into folky popsongs, not merely covering the songs, but reinterpreting them in a unique acoustic style with mostly guitars, double bass and vocals. They are joined by many guest musicians adding piano, drums, strings and brass instruments to the mix, creating easy-going pop songs with catchy melodies.

The band´s debut album “Popscotch” should be interesting for people who are not into Metal at all as well as for those who might want to hear what their favorites would sound like in a different musical universe. People who do not know the original songs might find it hard to believe that this is Heavy Metal, while those who know and love the songs already should be surprised by unfamiliar sounds.

For me, who is much more at home in the world of Pop than Metal, this works really well. Claudia Sorvillo´s voice is smooth, yet expressive, while Giacomo Pedicini´s double bass and Ernesto Nobili´s guitar lay down the melodies for her. The music varies with every song, the softer melodies nicely contrasting with the lyrics. Overall “Popscotch” is a strong, listenable album. (SO, 8/10)
