That Stoneman like to provoke is well-known, at the latest, since releasing the song „Wer ficken will muss freundlich sein“ (Those who want to fuck need to be nice). With their fourth album and a line-up change, which left Rico H. and singer Mikki as the only remaining founding members, the Swiss have reinvented themselves, four years after their last release. When before, they mainly played English-speaking songs, their new album “Goldmarie” is sung solely in German. I honestly have to say that I was a bit skeptical at first. Stoneman in German? Sure, “Wer ficken will muss freundlich sein” is one of their best and also best-known songs, but only in German? Won´t this scare away many fans? Won´t they limit themselves to the German-speaking area?

It remains to be seen but I can tell you one thing about this, fourth album already now: it has a lot to offer. Melodic Goth rock songs with provocative lyrics at their best. Again and again, I´m amazed at Mikki´s vocal range - with ease; he switches from growls to clean vocals and back. The songs still sound like Stoneman, they are only in German - maybe this could be the reason why they are a bit more melancholic than before. The lyrics are also way more encrypted and thus are up to everyone´s own interpretation. And FINALLY, they are not so much about drugs anymore.

The music, the vocals, lyrics and also the new attitude of the band fits together 100%. The songs offer a lot and, perhaps, Goldmarie could become Stoneman´s strongest album. Then again, I still have a hard time accepting that Stoneman will only sing in German from now on. I just love songs like Devil in a Gucci Dress, No Sweet November, Dead or Alive so much and if they wouldn´t play them live anymore, I´d be very disappointed. So, therefore, I´m just silently hoping that, for the next record, they will do a nice mix of German and English lyrics. Even if they wont, with Goldmarie, Stoneman released another awesome record. (SM, 9,5/10)

Four ears, one opinion:

Gothic Metal is actually not really my cup of tea. But if all bands of this genre sounded like this album I would change my opinion. Goldmarie showcases the perfect balance of all its single ingredients: bitter-sweet melodies meet even bitterer lyrics and steel-strong guitar riffs. The opening double, Der Rote Vorhang Fällt and Es Brennt ein Licht, are the perfect example: Choruses, which will never leave your head again; melodies that are not from this world and a perfect orchestration that is always spot-on and never too much. You can`t do it any better! The following songs don´t quite come close to those two excellent songs but the quality level never falls too low. Instead the lyrics become really vicious (Lolita, Mord ist Kunst and the title track). There is also a re-recorded old track called Freundlich Sein, which fits perfectly to the rest of the songs. But you can nevertheless argue about sense or nonsense of including it - especially because it is a regular album track and not a bonus song. (TP, 7,5/10)
