Cunning Mantrap are the three gentlemen Phry McDunstan on guitar and mic, Acid Maurice on drums and Tobias Schmidt on Bass. “Dull Days” is the first album from the Cologne guys and it contains six songs. The first song, though, is only an intro and the last one an instrumental piece. This makes me wonder: Why didn´t they wait with completing the album until they had at least ten song? In my opinion, six songs are way too few for a full-length album, even though it costs only 10 euros. Even if they had published it as an EP, the same question would have arisen. Why not save the songs for a longer album? Anyhow! The guys play hard rock of the 1970s and 90s, spiced up with elements from Blues, Stoner and Progressive Rock. It´s a good mix, especially given that they recorded the album all by themselves and for Acid it was a premiere ´on the knobs´, after completing his studies as a music producer just recently. Personally, I miss the polish. I think one shouldn´t rush to release an album. But some simply can´t wait to publish their stuff and often this turns out to be a bad idea. The music on “Dull Days” is pretty simple and rough, the vocals are always the same. There isn´t much that will surprise the listener; music and vocals don´t exactly teem with variety. If I had to pick one song recommendation, it would perhaps be “Options”.
