With “Embers”, Red Sun Revival give us a little teaser of what´s to come in spring, when the band is set to release its second album. The English band calls Wave Rock home and accordingly, all songs on “Embers” are melancholic and dreamy. Accompanied by well-played guitar solos, the keyboard melodies and the electric violin passages come perfectly into their own. The music on Red Sun Revival´s EP is pure listening pleasure. I just take issue with Vaughan Rob Leydon´s voice, especially when he sings with that affected, rough-breathy voice. With “Broken” it´s not as bad as with “Mistakes”, and with “Surrender” it totally fits but I think a bit more variety wouldn´t have done any harm. That´s because when he doesn´t use that voice, he sounds a whole lot better. I know, his vocals are one part of the mysticism the bands wants to create but I also think that it´s possible to sing differently and still be Gothic Wave. I´m curious to find out whether the upcoming record will offer more variety in this area. The four songs on the “Embers” EP are all very good and I would even listen to them if they were instrumentals – despite the fact that I´m not a big fan of that stuff.
