At the latest since “The Blackening” from 2007, Machine Head have found their very own style, which is technical, progressive Thrash Metal. Their latest output, “Bloodstones & Diamonds”, does not change that formula at all. Those who liked its predecessors will also love the band´s new opus because on it, Rob Flynn and his sidekicks perfected their style: never before has their sound been more heavy-as-fuck, diverse or melodious. Plus, they wrote a song – “Now We Die” – which is as great as some of their older anthems like “Imperium” or “Davidian”. So far so good but “Bloodstones & Diamonds” is far from becoming my next favourite album. Like its predecessors, it is often too incoherent. Many songs are plain weird and arranged without a central theme. Also, I think the permanent use of bendings and tremolos in the riffs is simply annoying. What I miss are simple-structured party tracks the likes of “The Blood, the Sweat, the Tears”, “Old” or “Take my Scars”. Maybe Machine Head have demonstrated their ambition and sense of perfectionism with “Bloodstones & Diamonds” but I am still missing something on this record.
