Serious Black are something like a supergroup - or you could also say a ‘catch basin’ for former Metal stars. There are, for example, Roland Grapow (Masterplan, ex-Helloween) and Thomen Stauch (ex-Blind Guardian) and also (former) musicians from bands like Visions of Atlantis, Edenbridge and Tad Morose. But Serious Black call themselves a serious band and not only a project. This statement is supported by the way they wrote their songs. They did not exchange their ideas via e-mail, instead they booked a studio, met there and wrote a couple of songs together.
We are talking here about professional musicians, writing music the old school way - so nothing could go wrong, right? Accordingly, the first impression is quite positive: melodic Metal, played without too much bombast but with a lot of variation regarding speed, rhythms, melodies and arrangements. So, actually everything seems perfect! But after listening to the whole album once, I realize that I do not remember a single line or melody. And also after a few more turns, this does not change. The reason is quite obvious: The choruses and melodies are anything but distinctive and thus, memorable. My first good impression has gotten seriously cracked. But I am nevertheless curious about the band’s future. They will have their first live test very soon, on a tour with Orden Ogan and Hammerfall.
