Keep of Kalessin, well-known in their homeland Norway for years, recently released their 6th studio album – it´s an album that is remarkable in several respects. There are, for example, the recurring Black Metal attacks, which are reminiscent of Dimmu Borgir. In addition, there are dark, intense, atmospheric synth parts and also slower, more melodic guitar parts. To make the sound a real bastard, the songs are equipped with dark but melodic and almost poppy choruses, mostly using clean vocals. Because of this potpourri of different elements, it is quite difficult to fit the music into a certain genre, as you can imagine.

“Epistemology” is one of the most versatile Dark Metal albums I have ever listened to. I really like many parts, especially the atmospheric parts and the choruses. Also the alternations between rough and clean vocals are great - and much better than what most Metalcore bands do. Songs like “Dark Divinity” and “Introspection” are well-done, especially their poppy choruses. But, the album has a downside. Basically, most tracks are simply too long. I think the band could´ve easily shortened most tracks by two, three or even four minutes without losing essentials. Nevertheless, it´s a nice piece of work!
