From the new Finnish label Dies Irae who have a certain hit with the band Steep comes this five song EP by trash/death band Codeon. Finland seems to have an endless supply of metal guitar players who just live for showing of their techniques. “On My Side” is to me just an endless stream of fast guitar patterns that eventually just make you lose interest in the songs themselves. Ok. I know there’s a lot of people who will feel just the opposite when it comes to this band and, yes, I admit I’m probably not the right person to tell those people about this album but when a band decides to inform you on the back sleeve of the CD who plays what solo on what song you have to consider yourself warned! Sure there’s a lot of drive and authentic rage going on in the music but where as Children of Bodom are able to slow down and make room for a catchy chorus, these guys just kick in another “mindless” riff-pattern. But that doesn’t make this EP all bad! The tempo is fast enough to kick your ass no matter if you don’t know exactly in which part you’re going and they do play well. And although it sometimes feels the songs are about to collapse because of all the speed and mass, the guys keep it together well. Will be interesting to see how a full length album will keep together if all the songs are as crammed as here.
