What a groovy change from all metal! Don´t judge book by its cover, but do pay attention to this one: the colorful funky monkey precisely represents the sound and spirit of the record – crazy, funny, surprising, inexpressible! If the monkey isn´t descriptive enough, look at the warning sign: “Parental advisory: no sense lyrics”. This album is such a cascade of not just many music styles and singing techniques, but also languages (French/English), so you´ve no chance to concentrate on the lyrics anyway, trying to keep up with the constantly changing pace.
The track “Tekno Kills” is very upbeat, impossible to resist dancing, the electronic vibe so strong, gets you up and moving at once! “Disto Cake” is another excellent party tune, but with very little sound variety. The next two tracks, “My Boom is bumpin” and “Watch´ ha” are the slower songs, more steady and a little too repetitive (boring at times), although have just as clear enjoyable beat. “Dot Comma” comes surprisingly after the previous two, very lively, it has more consistent melody, as opposed to the other tracks on the record. “Da Teen Town” is in the hip-hop style, much unlike the rest of the album. Number 11 is an easy going relaxed track with unchanging solid rhythm throughout the song and again somehow hiphop. The last track “Fonk Me” is definitely the highlight and so saved until the end. Good rhythm, strong clean sound, an ultimate dance song. (The record also offers a video for the track, worth checking!) Another electronic track is “Sonic” is the only one with obvious female vocals, which makes it much softer and gentler among the rest.
Shaka Ponk has such a mix of styles, it is difficult to put them into any one single genre. Overall, this is a good record to have in the background of your alternative party&smoking session.
