The legendary Untoten devote themselves on this opus to the just as legendary Hungarian noblewoman Erzsebet Báthory, who tortured and killed hundreds of young girls in the 16th century. It is well-known that also Cradle of Filth kept themselves busy with this murderous lady and now she is honoured with this “Schwarzromantischem Singspiel” (dark-romantic singing-play). The legend of Elizabeth Báthory says, that she killed virgins, to take a bath in their blood to protect her own beauty. Until today it is not clear whether this is true or not, but it is sure, that the Báthory was mentally ill. The Untoten now set to music the life of the countess, from her childhood over her wedding at the age of eleven until her death in 1614. Moreover, some parts play in the present time, in which a group of young people spends a some days in the castle of bloody countess. The ghost of the aristocratic lady is still wandering around in the building and gets in contact with the people of the present time.
Those, who are interested in the history of Elizabeth Báthory, will be banned under the spell of this great play, because the Untoten create a dark and sad atmosphere, which is very forcing. The range of the music goes from monotone-depressive (“Die Jagd”) over rocking-shocking (“Koste das Blut”) to electro-shaking “(Hexenreich”). In addition to the two discs the album also includes a booklet with stage directions as well as quite beautiful illustrations and paintings by Greta Csatlós, who is also responsible for the gorgeous singing.
It is an outstanding, sinister and moving opus, which is simply perfect.
