Finally another sign of life from Annihilator, and a quite strong one! The title “Metal” says it all. Jeff Waters does not show any sign of slowing down, and after leaving problems with business partners and labels behind, he offers here something like a “best of” his career. “Metal” contains basically everything that made this Canadian “band” - well, basically Jeff Waters plus so many support musicians that I lost track - so special in the past: Real heavy thrash riffs, tough Speed Metal that are still melodious ear-candy “Chasing The High”), classic Metal, great melodies and parts that could be Pop-songs (e. g. in “Haunted”), diversity, originality and intelligent lyrics... Who managed to miss out this band, please get this album as an introduction!
Another aspect turns this CD into something special: One or two guest musicians are featured on every track, e. g. Alexi Laiho (Children Of Bodom), Michael Amott und Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy), Jesper Strømblad (In Flames), Steve ´Lips` Kudlow (Anvil) and Anders Bjørler (The Haunted). Annihilator consists now of Waters, Mike Mangini (dr) and singer/guitarist Dave Padden who can also be heard on this album. Therefore I just hope that this exceptional Canadian guitarist and songwriter soon has a stable line-up and more regular musical output!
