In my opinion the examples of a successful cooperation between Rock- or Metalbands and classical Orchestras are rare. And here you could even argue about the point if Corvus Corax are a real rockband. Well, definitely not in a narrow definition or according to their instruments... yet their cooperation with the orchestra is more than successful. Just like Carl Orff for his „Carmina Burana“, Corvus Corax got their inspiration from medieval texts for their fascinating 1,5-hour composition; also the title reminds of their classic role model. It took three years to prepare this visual and acoustic opulence until it could take place on the Museumsinsel in Berlin, 19th and 20th August 2005. Besides the band (with bagpipes, trumpets and monster-lyre), opera choir and Philharmonic Orchestra from Cottbus Theater the project included many more actors, singers and dancers – in summary about 170 people. „Cantus Buranus“ could just like „Carmina Burana“ tear down borders and prejudices between „serious“ and „entertainment“ music. A bonus is a 25-minutes documentary with english subtitles, where the musicians explain their instruments, the project and medieval music. Highly recommendable, and a must for fans of the band anyway.
PS: Corvus Corax IS a rockband!
