First of all, for me from the Southern Alps the scenery looks pretty familiar: idyllic landscapes, country people and in between a few long-haired guys in leather jackets that make noise in some garages.
Metal clubs, concerts and festivals, the essential “scene” is far, far away. Still no-one of us ever had a chance to meet Anthrax’ Scott Ian in the local pub, or check out Nuclear Blast label & store just around the corner...
This documentary that was on ARTE early this year should be part of every Metal collection! Director Andreas Geiger managed to capture a piece of real life, to portray label-boss Markus Staiger and other Metalheads in an affectionate way and also tell the story behind Nuclear Blast.
A rather open local priest meets rather conservative Metal-parents, local seniors and Sonata Arctica in the village pub andandand... many reasons to smile. My personal moment of sudden insight: Geiger subtly compares Metal-iconography (skulls, swords, dragons) with typical depictions of catholic saints – wow, nothing has changed! This documentary might even be useful to counter classical prejudices like “Metalfan = satanist, cannibal etc.” Sometimes it’s difficult to understand this German Slang, but there are also English subtitles.
About 2 x 20 min bonusmaterial offers extended interviews and music videos of e. g. Nightwish, Dimmu Borgir, Hypocrisy and Cannibal Corpse. Yet not full 10 because often interviewpartners are not identified, and because of disgusting (and in my opinion unnecessary) butcher scenes.
