Good live bands need good live albums – and usually also a big series of it. And so a considerable DVD and live CD did come into the world after only two studio albums. “Blast” has the most professional artwork by far, also a new composed song choice – and leaves its predecessor easily behind. RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS stepped up at their gig in Glasgow with an obvious reduced stage design – less medieval, classical rock band instead , the band logo dominates, no frippery, rather a modern display – what places their music in a good and rocking character above the medieval, surprised me during the first scenes on the DVD: the stage seemed to be pretty empty on the total view, the band needed some songs to get warm and to fill the big area. The sound is captured succesfully, the balance between band and audience, which joins in during some songs (not only “Crooked Bridge”) with noisy and letter-perfect roar succeeded as well. Despite of better image quality, the area sometimes is a bit too obscured to get a focused image when filmed from the back part of the location. Less martial outfits, less fire, well dosed and mostly appropriate placed fire effects – RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS became more professional and it seems that the medieval scene is in for a race about the best live DVD. In short: make up your own mind!
