The Live at the Bowl `68 is seen as a landmark for the The Doors and just about every fan has heard of it. As far as “dead” bands go, the general disappointment of not being able to see them live is compensated by these live DVDs.

So, thus the live DVD is out and all the fans are amazed. The non-fans not so much. This DVD seems to incorporate the Doors pretty damn well. The Doors´ trademark, melodic chaos and exceedingly intricate lyrics/poetry are there and the only thing absent is the police or fire marshal to put the concert to an end. However, one cannot forget that The Doors are not a band for everyone. There are plenty of points of time, where if one were to listen out of context, he/she would find lots of difficulties finding the beat, melody, and general sense. Then there are the lyrics, which make absolutely no sense a lot of the times. And the performers (or at least Jim) are on acid. But that´s The Doors –if you don´t like it, you don´t have to, but this DVD is exactly that to a tee.

There are some extras, mostly consisting of interviews with the remaining band members as well as others involved in the production. It was pretty interesting to see how the original show had problems, like Jim´s microphone failing and how these difficulties were tackled by mixer Bruce Botnick. They could have, however thrown in some old interviews with Mr. Morrison, though.

In the end, this DVD is a definite must for all fans of the band as well as the genre in general. The sound and picture quality leave no room for criticism –except that some people may find it a bit too polished.
