Well, what can you do 6 days before X-mas? Buying presents, get shit-faced at a Christmas-party or simply watch Paradise Lost at Nosturi. Like already three years ago the 5 Englishmen dared to come to the Finnish capital in dark and cold December to deliver the soundtrack of winter.

But before them the Finns of Godsplague tried to warm up the crowd already. Shortly before their gig started there was only a handful of people in front of the stage which changed, however, quickly during their gig. With their self-proclaimed “Friday Night Boozin´ Heavy Metal” the guys could even on a Tuesday night convince one or the other to shout along and shake his hair. A mid-riff kiss between singer Nico Hartonen, who every now and then also liked to play the guitar, and guitarist Euge Valovirta showed that also the band was very happy and content with the gig.

Then at 9pm, which is damn early for Finnish standards, the cofounders of gothic metal Paradise Lost entered the stage. In a surprisingly good mood and with technical perfection the “champs of old” wowed the crowd, which was mainly composed of “oldschool” metallers but also the inevitable “gothic chicks”.

The band itself gets along without any theatrical gimmicks and manages it to create an atmosphere without the use of a lavish stage setting, tragic make up or extravagant costumes that is emotional but at the same time animates shouting alongs and headbanging. But once again it was the older songs like “As I Die”, “Enchantment”, “One Second” and “Gothic” that evoked the biggest reactions from the crowd. Of course also their latest album “In Requiem” had to be sufficiently promoted and thus more or less the first half of the album was played; especially “Never for the Damned” already stood out to become a new life favourite. Maybe they reserved the second half of the album for the tour with HIM next spring?! In the encore part the band played “Erased” and as a set-closer “Say Just Words” and then it was all over again and you felt the urgent need to buy everything from the merchandise table. Nick Holmes and his cohorts will be on tour again in February and March, for some reason, however, only as a support for HIM. Nevertheless check them out and get enchanted.
