Six Feet Under, Nile, Dark Funeral, Disbelief, Dying Fetus, Cataract and Wycked Wytch are the bands that played in the big Markthalle (for a quite acceptable price). Sureshot couldn’t have picked a worse day for their first Sureshot Week Day. But Ensiferum wouldn’t be Ensiferum, if they let that slow them down in any way. Like with the Moonsorrow concert, the place was full, but not over crowded.

The warm up band Aeons Confer had to arrange for someone to fill in for their singer Tim, who had fallen ill, so Steve „Nachtgarm“ of Negator was backstage with an MP3 player taking a last minute, crash course of the lyrics. You really couldn’t tell, since Steve’s voice fit together with the band so well, like the proverbial fist to the face. There was screaming and grunting and the full guitar sound evoked an atmosphere like there would be no tomorrow – or at least, there wasn’t one planned. A band we will hopefully see a lot more of. Especially the song „Bringer Of Light“ was very catchy.

After a short break, the intro began and the five Finns took over the stage. All of them bear-chested – ok, Meiju Enho kept all her clothes on (much to the disappointment of the male fans), and with war paint on their faces, Ensiferum kicked off. You can tell this band really enjoy what they do, since no one was completely serious for very long. The band’s stage presence was impressive. Especially front man Petri Lindroos has improved his stage presence compared to previous concerts; he only has slightly poor posture (whereas he used to have a bit of a hunchback) and he works the audience confidently, easilly pulling the audience into his grasp without arrogance, but simply with fun. The only damper on the party was a warning from the organiser, as some overly confident fans broke a lamp while crowdsurfing (we are talking about the tiny Headbanger´s Ballroom), and the organiser threatened in between songs „If I catch one more person crowdsurfing, that’s it“. However, the atmosphere didn’t suffer, since Ensiferum partied on immediately. I had some problems hearing the band, dueto the people around me who were ‚singing’ along with songs like „Little Dreamer“ and „Slayer Of Light“. Not until they had played three encore songs, did Ensiferum finally leave the stage and their „Battle Song“ was a fitting end to the concert. I don’t think any of the people in the audience would have preferred to see Six Feet Under!
