A weekday that even the most depressive Gothband could not manage to depict made me worry a bit, but no, Tavastia was full way before the gig started. No doubt that Finns really enjoy Old School Bay Area Thrash, and many might be also curious if those Metalveterans can still pull it off.
The opening act Biomechanical, UK, did their job quite well, yet their album “The Empire Of The Worlds” seemed not to be widely known. And their highly complex ultra Speed songs are too difficult for headbanging or singing along without knowing them... therefore most of the audience preferred to stay withdrawn and listen thoroughly. The band rocked on, posing like pros, singer John K. always seeking contact to fans. And when they played the metal version of Star Wars´ “Imperial March” and finally Priest´s “Painkiller”, they had surely won some more new fans. They kicked ass!
A totally different picture, when after a short break Exodus appeared – ecstatic fans in front of the stage made a fotografer´s job quite difficult... A moshpit formed almost immediately and was continued almost until the end of the show. The fans went nuts, cheered to every Song, and statements like “you´re the best crowd on the tour so far” surely added to that. And Exodus deserved these enthusiastic reactions indeed.
Just remember that the band released their debut album more than 20 years ago, and guitarist Gary Holt is the last of the founding members in the line-up... but with Paul Bostaph (Drums Ex-Slayer, Ex-Forbidden), Lee Altus (Gitarre, Ex-Heathen), Jack Gibson (Bass) and the mega-agile Frontmonster Rob Dukes the band offered a high-engergy show that much younger musicians would have troubles to sustain. Exodus opened with “Bonded By Blood” and included more classics in the program (“Fuel For The Fire” or “30 Seconds” among the encores), yet naturally they focused on their actual CD “Shovel Headed Kill Machine”. 150 percent from start till final, a real “Lesson in Violence”! So if you didn´t see Exodus live, you really missed something!
