One thing right away - finally a prequel that indeed kicks ass!

Star Trek unites the classic characters of Kirk, Spock, "Bones", Scotty, Uhura, Checkov and Sulu, after a drastic rejuvenation process - as in this film they are just cadets of Starfleet Academy who just meet each other. And due to a crisis caused by a merciless opponent - Nero (brilliant: Eric Bana) - they become Crew members of the U.S.S. Enterprise Crew much earlier than expected. And they have to prove those qualities that should be well known part of Pop culture due to the late 60s/70s TV series. For the "Trekkies" it´s probably big fun to spot all those references to "later", but I can tell also those die-hard fans that they are going to be surprised, even those who know all classic TV shows. And not just because of a cameo by THE Spock Leonard Nimoy. And that should be all here about the plot...

The story also reveals a bit more of Spock´s and Kirk´s childhood and you will definitely find it "fascinating", Trekkie or not. The cast - especially Chris Pine as James Tiberius Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as wonderful "Bones" McCoy - does the trick to build a bridge to their older reincarnations, also assisted by brilliant casting and physical likeness, without performing parodies, e.g. of William Shatner. Chris Pine IS Kirk, just like we know him from TV, wonderfully unpredictable and "go-for-it" - only younger. Zachary Quinto´s Spock even pulls it off to give his character some new dimension. Technically, the Star Fleet received a make-over, too, yet CG effects do not dominate the film.

Summing up, you´ll be taken on a trip to outer space for 2 hours, and afterwards you walk out of the movie theater with a big smile on your face. No doubt, this is going to be the beginning of a new generation of Star Trek films, TV series - and fans. And myself, I can hardly wait to see another issue of Kirk-Spock-Bones arguments and new adventures. New Enterprise crew, "live long and prosper".

PS: Also the Clingon Empire recommends this movie http://www.lovefilm.com/features/detail.html?editorial_id=11929&cid=lftwitter
