In the 30s one man is holding all of America in an uproar with its bank robbery and murder. John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) and his gang are causing the legal representatives a public humiliation. No matter where and how they strike, they always seem to escape by a hair. With his charm and his cool statements he wins even the public for himself and can go into hiding wherever he wants. The government is powerless, but cannot accept this humiliation and takes further steps: a new anti-crime law and a new FBI special unit under the leadership of Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale). An exciting cat and mouse game begins... You know director Michael Mann already by modern gangster films like Miami Vice or Heat or the boxing epos Ali. But Public Enemies cannot continue his successful series. The thrilling story even leaves room for a romance, the action is super real, but with the desperately tried authenticity of the image it is too much of a good thing. The shaky camera work takes a bit of the fun when watching. If you´re trying to copy the 30s, then please with everything about this one... filmstripes, cuts etc... Conclusion: A film that mainly appeals with great acting.
