Movie re-makes can be divided into two groups: a homage to the original and a pure lack of original ideas. Luckily, The Karate Kid is the former.

The movie takes place in China, where a young boy, Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) moves to with his mom. There the kid finds himself homesick, culture shocked and bullied. Luckily he finds not Mr. Miyagi, but Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who teaches him kung fu in preparation for a tournament.

Pretty much everything in the movie came together into a good, tight package. Every actor played his and her part well and the plot was straightforward and honest to the original version. The odd reference to the original film, discussions on spirituality as well as a bit of witty joking all add up to a good movie. Jaden Smith’s acting is a tricky one though; it feels as if he knows that people are watching him, so he puts on an act and thus it does not feel 100% natural, but considering his age and his parents (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, if you’ll allow the pun), it shouldn’t take too long for him to shed this off.

All in all, the film was a very nice experience. It is primarily made not just for a younger audience, but big kids, who vividly remember Daniel LaRusso -like yours truly- are able to enjoy it too.
