After a decade of waiting, we finally have the third Men in Black. After the last flop, there is only room upwards and the wait is worth while. The movie takes place both in 2012 as well as in 1969. The plot revolves around Agent J (Will Smith) going back in time to rescue his partner (Tommy Lee Jones) form an alien assassin, Boris “The Animal” and, of course, to save Earth.

The director, Barry Sonnenfeld, did probably his best work yet –this, however, isn’t that difficult for the maker of movies, like “Wild Wild West” and “Get Shorty.” The chemistry between Jones and Smith works like a wonder once again, but the true glory is within Josh Brolin’s role as the young agent K. Not only is there a strong physical likeness, but the mannerisms, diction and physical presence are executed to the dot. All in all, the acting was done really well, although it was quite surprising to see Jermaine Clement (best known as Jermaine in Flight of the Conchords) as the bad guy –of course literally inches thick make-up helps.

The MiB films and series are naturally aimed more for the younger audience, but the latest creation seems a bit more grown up and as my fellow viewers (30-50 years old) were all cracking up at just about every joke there was. Everything you can expect is there from lots and lots of gadgets and effects to the cameo roles, where you go “Of course he/she is an alien!” Not bad at all, but not quite there for full points.
